He used a technique called silk screening to create these images. This involved enlarging and transferring the image onto silk. He used a photograph by Gene Korman which was taken from the 1953 film; Niagara. He produced the series of images in 1967 after she committed suicide in 1962. Warhol found in Monroe a fusion of two of his consistent themes: death and the cult of celebrity.
